Lasik and Refractive Surgery

Is LASIK Right for You?

Your doctor will conduct a comprehensive eye exam to determine if you will benefit from the procedure, depending on the type of correction needed, eye health, and other factors. If your doctor suggests LASIK, a few questions you may want to consider before committing to the procedure are:

• Do you want to reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses?
• Have you talked to your doctor about any risks or side effects of the procedure, and are you prepared to accept these?
• Are you prepared for the possibility that you may still require glasses or lenses after the procedure to achieve perfect vision?

If you and your doctor agree that LASIK is a good option for you, your doctor will provide all of the information you need to prepare for the procedure. Typically, you will not be permitted to wear contact lenses for a specific amount of time leading up to the surgery.

LASIK uses a special device, which pulses a laser light into your eye to correct your vision. This is a pain-free and quick procedure that only takes about five minutes for each eye. Within a few days after LASIK your vision should stabilize and you will be able to gauge the results. Your doctor will tell you about post-procedure care and will schedule a visit soon after the procedure to assess your vision.
